2014 Allen & Ginter Derek Jeter Rip Card

Well, I pulled this Derek Jeter Rip Card out of a box of Allen & Ginter, and now I am not sure what I will do with it. The obvious thing to do would be to rip it open and see what's inside. But I don't know if I can do that. Unripped versions of this card have gone for between $115 and $180 on eBay, and ripped versions of this card seem to be in the $15 to $30 range. There don't seem to be a lot of the embedded cards that can make up that $85-165 gap between the ripped and unripped cards. Maybe a particularly nice red mini autograph or one of the wood or metal parallels would do the trick, but what are the odds of that?

My card collection is more about the fun than the money, but I don't give a rip about Jeter and thus have no real incentive to keep the card. There is a chance that I could pull some epic card that is interesting to me, but given the sticker price on an unripped Jeter card it would take something truly special to bridge the gap. Someone in my hometown already pulled the wood Felicia Day mini parallel, so that card is out of play. I don't know what else is out there that might justify ripping this card.

What do you think? RIP IT OR KEEP IT?

  1. I think you are right that you will probably not find something inside that is worth more than Jeter. I think I would sell Jeter.

  2. I'd sell too. Like you said, not about the money, but it could fund the hobby for you for a bit...more boxes, completing sets, etc.

    1. I am thinking I will use part of the money to buy a cheaper unripped card, so I can still have something to rip and have money left over for other things.

  3. I will go with sell as well. Rip cards look fun, but I would make the cash back on the card instead of gambling for the hit.

  5. As a Red Sox fan I love the thought of ripping a Jeter card. However in this case I would sell it.

I think the real question is when to sell it. I don't know if I would sell it right now or if I would wait a month when the media goes all "OH MY GOD JETER IS ABOUT TO PLAY HIS LAST GAME". At that point all 24 of the others may be found making it worth less but the hype might make it worth more.

    1. Several of them have been found and sold. One of them has already been sold twice on eBay. I imagine it will pull in pretty consistent money no matter when I sell it.

  6. I see Night Owl's comment and I think of CNBC yeller Jim Cramer with his "sell sell sell" button.

I'd sell it too. If you were a Jeter collector, I'd keep it but otherwise get rid of it now.

  7. single rip card numbered to less than 50....then sell. it's a pretty good rule of thumb that people use.

  9. Oh - I read a comment on another site I never thought off:

"First box I have ever bought for myself and I pulled a 5/5 McGwire/Canseco double rip card. Magnet sticks to it."

So there's a thought to see if you may have a metal in it. Still - I think sell, but I thought that was an interesting comment.

    1. I tried the magnet thing. It didn't stick to it. Good suggestion, though.

  11. I have to admit I'm a little surprised that there wasn't anyone urging me to keep it. I was planning on selling the card, but I wanted to see what the rest of the blogosphere had to say about it. And also show off that I pulled a Rip Card.

  12. If you do sell, I would be interested in buying. Big Jeter collector.

    1. I am selling it, but I put it up on eBay last week. The bidding closes this Friday evening. I believe there are a couple of the Jeter Rip Cards on there right now.
