Sketch Card Week: Leia by Jason Keith Phillips

I am trying to beat my self-imposed deadline to write a Sketch Card Week post today. So far passively watching UFC Fight Night is a lot more interesting to me than trying to come up with words about cards. Then after that ended I saw the news about the police officers being shot in Texas and I really didn't feel like posting, but I tend to subscribe to the 'Keep Calm and Carry On' mentality when faced with tragedy. If criminals and terrorists keep me from doing the things I would normally do out of fear or sadness, then they win. So I'm going to write this post and get it out there before midnight strikes.

This sketch card comes from one of the Topps Star Wars Galactic Files sets, but I am not sure which one. There were a lot of them, and I haven't researched them all. I got it from eBay and the auction listing also didn't mention which specific Galactic Files set this was from. I am not sure if the design of the sketch cards was different from set to set or not, so maybe that branding on the front or the picture on the back would be an easy tell upon me doing some research. Well, I didn't do any research.

I am familiar with the artist, however, as I have picked up some of his work in the past. Jason Keith Phillips has done quite a bit of sketch card work, although I think he recently (as in, within the last six months or so, I have no real sense of time passing) announced on his Facebook page that he is moving away from work on corporate-owned properties to focus on his own creations. I thought this was a pretty neat rendition of Leia and the price was right, so I snapped it up. I really ought to sit down one day and count up how many Leia sketches I have now. It has to be more than ten at this point, I would think. It's a pretty cool sketch. I was happy to make it a part of my collection.

My thoughts go out to the police who were attacked tonight in Texas. Law Enforcement Officers have a tough job. I think I will leave it at that.

  1. It's series 1. Series 2 says series 2 on the back. They were the only series produced. I think I was way ahead of the curve by pulling a full color sketch from both my boxes (both series) as most of them I've seen online are black and white. This is a good one though.

I'm with you on not letting the bad guys win.

    1. I was thinking of Star Wars Galaxy, which had 7 series produced (as far as I know). I guess Galactic Files is a different thing altogether. This is a pretty nice sketch, especially given some of the other sketches I've seen that somehow made it past the Topps "Quality" Control folks.

  2. Any Star Wars sketch card is a winner in my book. As for the shootings... it's so sad and disheartening to even think of the evil that exists in our world today. My father always lectures me about watching the news, so I'm able to inform my students... and he makes an excellent point. But it's seriously so depressing, that I rarely read/watch the news. I'd rather read card blogs, sort cards, or get out of the house.

    1. I like Star Wars quite a bit.

I don't think that bad things in the world are escalating as astronomically as we are led to believe. I think that we are just so connected that we hear about each and every thing that happens, where in the past we might just hear regional news and major world events. The news exploits that in order to gain views/clicks/comments.

    2. I agree. I didn't mean to make it sounds like the world is filled with pure evil and it's a terrible place to live. I firmly believe that there is much more warm hearted, compassionate people than bad. But with cameras, cell phones, social media, etc... we have exponentially more access to negative (and positive) stories. I just avoid most of it altogether, unless it's something I hear from others than can be used as a "teachable" moment.

    3. I tend to avoid the news as well, but I get sucked in from time to time. I am a pretty negative and jaded person by nature, but I do try to remind myself that things aren't as bad as the news cycle would have us believe.
