A Cheeky Trio of Power Girl Sketch Cards

Today was the first day of a five-day weekend for me. I had Monday off anyway, and I took Thursday and Friday off just because my kids don't have school and I'm tired after working nearly every day for the last six weeks. I probably should have done more today, but I woke up groggy and never really recovered. I have sorted my 2016 Topps Baseball Factory Set and scanned some cards, but that's about it. On to the post!

In reference to the title, the first sketch card in this bunch isn't too cheeky, but the other ones make up for it. To close out Sketch Card Week, I've got three different Power Girl sketches I picked up for my collection. None of them are from licensed sets, but all are from artists I've been tracking for a while.

This card was done by artist John Monserrat. He doesn't seem to be particularly active on any of his social media profiles, but I linked to his Facebook page because it seems to have the most recent update. He posted this card in a thread on the Blowout Cards forum and I grabbed it up. I was pretty glad to be the one who got it, as it drew some interest after it was posted. It's a great depiction of the character on Monserrat's personal sketch card stock.

This next card was done by artist Doug Riggsby. He put up a bunch of cards for sale on his Facebook page, including this one that fits right into my Power Girl PC. I've been watching some of his other cards on eBay for a long time, but I never pulled the trigger on one. I have a couple of sketches done by his daughter, Emily Riggsby, including a Power Girl sketch. This one is also done on personal sketch card stock. Many of his sketches include some sort of joke or punch line, and they are often a little risqué, like this gag that references all the attention given to Power Girl's famous cleavage. I would love to add more art from both Doug and Emily to my collection in the future.

This is a humorous sketch card done by artist Joe Gravel. His gags are similar to those done by Doug Riggsby, but the images tend to be a little less work-safe. His DeviantArt gallery excludes some of the wilder stuff, and you can Google his name for the rest. Many of his sketches feature DC character The Atom getting up to shenanigans due to his shrinking ability. In this case, he's catching a Discount Flight courtesy of Power Girl, but he's not acting the part of a considerate passenger.

And that does it for this edition of Sketch Card Week. I thought it was pretty successful overall. My sketch collection continues to grow, and I really need to find a good way to display it. Maybe I should spend some time during this long weekend sorting and organizing my many stacks and boxes of cards.

  1. A little risqué is right, but all in good fun. I always enjoy your sketch card posts. The one done by Monserrat looks like it belongs in a high end product.

    1. Yeah, I try to keep my collection family-friendly for the most part, so I was glad to find some Power Girl sketches by Riggsby and Gravel that weren't too far over the line. The Monserrat sketch really is nice. I was lucky to get it.

  2. Oh man... that sketch by Gravel is epic! Definitely deserves a spot in the sketch card hall of fame.

    1. His art is pretty entertaining. I tend to like his sketches that are like this one; they tease at 'the line' without crossing over it. Of course, 'the line' is different for everyone.
