Last night my dad and I took my kids to the big local car show. Afterward, the kids said they had a good time, but you wouldn't have known it during the event, as there was plenty of whining going on. It was probably good for all of us to get out of the house, and the kids really enjoy spending time with their grandpa. The cars at the show were pretty neat, although I didn't get to look at as many as I'd like because herding the kids around stresses me out. I would love to resto-mod an old Datsun 510 or 240z, or an old Ford pick-up, but that is an expensive hobby and working on cars makes me swear more than I should.
Spider-Man was there, and my 8-year old was nervous that Spider-Man would give him guff about it. Sure enough, Spider-Man told him that when he gets an animated LEGO movie, it will be much bigger than Batman's film. He still posed with the kids for a few pictures, though, and whoever is under the mask seems like a pretty nice guy.
In addition to relic cards showing the drivers themselves, 2016 Panini Prizm Racing had relic cards for the driver & crew, showing the pit crew in action rather than a driver photo. I picked up this Green Flag parallel of Danica's Race Team card on eBay at some point in the last few months. I've got weekly racing posts queued up well into the coming months, so by the time I post on them, the details behind the acquisitions will be sketchy at best. This one is numbered # 129 / 149.
Today's race was the Kobalt 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Danica Patrick's engine blew up late in the race and she finished in 36th place. She hadn't been running much higher than that before the motor blew up, from what I saw. I was at church for most of the race, so I only tracked the standings on the website for the third stage of the race. The finish drops Danica to 30th overall in the driver standings.
The ones showing the cars are retail exclusive. I love car shows and have been attending them since I was younger than your kids are for this one. I've thought about starting a blog for car show pictures but I know I would never update it so I have not bothered
ReplyDeleteI had probably heard that they were retail exclusive at some point (maybe even from you), but I can't keep track of anything anymore, it seems. I attend car shows here and there, but I find it difficult to wander through crowds of people. Most of my exposure to cars these days comes from sites like Jalopnik or Facebook groups.
DeleteIt's nice to find out that there is another Datsun appreciator within the blogging community. My first car was a 240z, and even though my peers didn't think it was a "cool" car to have back in 2000, I really loved that car. Getting that car was by far the best thing that happened to me during my teenage years. Even things like the peeling paint (I was too cheap to have it painted) and the torn upholstery bring back very fond memories.
ReplyDeleteMy high school employer had a 260z sitting in his driveway. He had grown too big to fit into it, but he would never sell it to me. I think it's still there over 15 years later, rusting into itself.
DeleteI bought a 1986 Nissan 300zx in like 2006. I didn't do nearly enough research. I liked driving it, but the T-tops leaked, the heater was always on, one day the headliner fell over my face while I was driving, and it just always seemed to have something going on. I needed a daily driver, and it was a project car more than a daily driver.
I'd like to revisit the vintage Datsun/Nissan brand someday when I have more money and more space, but it seems like that's always a few years away.
