Power Girl Sketch by Collette Turner (with a Bonus Sketch!)

I've got another sketch card post today, this time with a comic book theme. Although I am mostly a Marvel fan, DC's Power Girl has become the primary focus of my comic book sketch card collection. I've considered starting sketch card collections for the characters my sons are named after, but I think it would be prohibitive cost-wise to start up four different character collections. There is too much competition for Wonder Woman sketches, and it seems like it's hard to find a lot of great She-Hulk sketches. I've picked up a few Scarlet Witch sketches, as her costume seems to come across really well in art, but I'm not a huge fan of the character. So, Power Girl it is.

I got this Power Girl Personal Sketch Card from an eBay seller. The artist is Collette Turner, who seems to be most active on her Facebook page at the moment, although she does post on Twitter and Instagram. She has a shop as well, stocked with a few pages of original comic book art. This particular sketch is shown on her DeviantArt page, which seems like it's been updated recently.

The sketch is awesome. I fully expected to lose the bidding on this one, as the detail and color is great. Turner does great faces and hair, and her shading and highlighting really go well with the fine linework. I was pretty excited when the auction ended and I was the winner. I think I was introduced to her work through the Perna Studios art sets. They typically have small print runs that sell out within hours or minutes, but watching their previews on Facebook alerts me to a lot of great artists.

The seller included a bonus sketch card in the package, which was a pretty cool addition. Usually bonus cards in an eBay package are a stack of 1990 Pro Set Football or some 1991 Donruss Baseball. You don't usually get original art as a bonus. If I'm not mistaken, this sketch features Audrey Hepburn, a very famous actress from before my time. Although the picture pretty much confirms it, I also scrolled way down Turner's Facebook page and found it there, labeled as an Audrey Hepburn commission. It seems like Turner is relatively open to commissions, she appears in some sketch card sets, and she also has some creator-owned comics out, but I'm not sure if you can buy them or if you had to support her Kickstarter to get copies.

  1. Audrey Hepburn may be before your time but she wasn't before mine. She was incredible. What a 'throw in'!

    1. Yeah, it was a pretty good extra. I think it might be more popular here in the comments section than the card I actually purchased!

    1. She was certainly beautiful, and Turner did a great job of capturing her likeness.

    1. Yeah, she does draw some great eyes. That's one of the hardest things to paint/draw, I think. If you get them just a little bit off, it can ruin the whole piece. Many of the miniatures I paint are a little (or a lot) cross-eyed.

    1. I was pretty happy with my purchase, especially with one of them being a bonus sketch.
